Bagwell bowies

Bagwell Bowies are a type of knife from the 19th century that were named after the craftsman who created them. This blog post will explore the history of the Bagwell Bowies and why they were so popular in the 1800s. It will also discuss some of the unique features of these knives and why they have become a collector’s item today.

History of Bagwell Bowies

Bagwell Bowies first appeared in the early 1800s and were one of the most popular knives of the time. They were named after their creator, Henry Bagwell, who was a blacksmith and knife maker in Texas. Bagwell was a skilled craftsman and his knives were renowned for their quality and durability. The Bagwell Bowie was a type of large sheath knife that was typically around 10 inches in length and had a curved blade with a large clip point. The handle was made of wood or horn, and the sheath was usually covered in leather. The design of the Bagwell Bowie made it a popular choice for many activities. It was used for hunting, fishing, and self-defense. During the American Civil War, soldiers on both sides of the conflict carried a Bagwell Bowie as a sidearm. The large size of the knife meant it could be used for a variety of tasks, from skinning game to cutting rope. The Bagwell Bowie also became popular with knife collectors in the late 19th century. Its unique design, craftsmanship, and historical significance make it a desirable item. Today, Bagwell Bowies are still highly sought after by collectors and can fetch a high price on the market. The Bagwell Bowie is an iconic part of American history, and its popularity has endured for over two centuries. It is a reminder of the craftsmanship of the 19th century and a symbol of the skills of the knife makers who created them. With its unique design, quality construction, and historical significance, the Bagwell Bowie is a highly sought after collector’s item. People around the world still appreciate its beauty and craftsmanship, making it a timeless icon of American history.

Unique Features of Bagwell Bowies

The Bagwell Bowie has several features that set it apart from other knives. One of the main features is the large clip point blade which is curved towards the tip. This feature gives the knife a unique silhouette while also providing a good balance of cutting power and maneuverability. Additionally, the handle of the Bagwell Bowie is made of wood or horn, which adds to its classic look and feel. The sheath is usually covered in leather, which provides additional protection and allows for easy carrying. In addition to its unique design, the Bagwell Bowie is also known for its quality and durability. The knives were made with high-grade steel which was heat-treated and hardened to ensure it was strong enough to take on the toughest tasks. This type of steel is still used today and is often found in modern knives. It is what allows the Bagwell Bowie to withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. The Bagwell Bowie is an iconic symbol of American history and its quality and timeless style has made it a favorite for knife collectors for over two centuries. Its large clip point blade, wooden or horn handle, and leather sheath make it a unique and highly sought after knife. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship that go into making a Bagwell Bowie make it a true work of art and a reminder of the skills of the 19th century knife makers.

Popularity in the 1800s

The Bagwell Bowie was extremely popular in the 1800s, particularly among the settlers of the American West. It was not only used for hunting and other everyday tasks, but it was also a symbol of status and wealth. Many of the most famous western figures, such as “Wild Bill” Hickok and “Buffalo Bill” Cody, were known to carry a Bagwell Bowie. As settlers and pioneers ventured into the uncharted territories of the West, they relied on the Bagwell Bowie to help them survive in the harsh and dangerous environment. The knife was a practical tool that could be used for a variety of tasks, from skinning and gutting animals to cutting rope and opening cans. It was also used as a weapon of self-defense, making it a vital part of the pioneer’s toolkit. The Bagwell Bowie has become a symbol of the American West and its rugged, independent spirit. It has been featured in countless movies, books, and television shows, and is even the official knife of the Texas Rangers. It remains a popular choice for knife collectors, and its distinctive style and quality construction make it a true classic.

Bagwell Bowies as a Collector’s Item

The Bagwell Bowie is a highly sought-after collector’s item. The original knives, handmade by blacksmiths in the 19th century, are highly prized among collectors. Bill Bagwell was a master bladesmith and one of the four founding members of the American Bladesmith Society.   Born in 1944, he was always fascinated by knives, making his first knife from an old saw at when 10 years old.  He specialized in forging hunting and bowie knives and pioneered the making of Damascus blades in the US and authored “Bowies, Big Knives, and the Best of Battle Blades”.  Bagwell was also an instructor for tactical knife fighting and shared his techniques with US Special Forces.  He was one of the founding members of the American Bladesmith Society and wrote the original charter for that organization. He also served as the society’s first secretary and was on its first board of directors.  Bill Bagwell passed away recently on February 2021.

Tibetan Kila Phurba Dagger

Tibetan Kila Phurba Dagger

$228.15
The Kila Phurba dagger is a three-sided knife, or nail-like ritual item traditionally associated with Indo-Tibetan Buddhism in which the knife is used to symbolically penetrate and break the earth.  Like many of the traditional Tibetan metal instruments, the kila is often made from brass and iron (sometimes of meteoric iron) and often features three faces of Vajrakīla, a deity manifestation of heroic power.  The three faces are often featured as one joyful, one peaceful, one wrathful (not in this case) and the blade is usually composed of three triangular facets or faces, meeting at the tip.  These represent, respectively, the blade's power to transform the negative energies known as the "three poisons" or "root poisons" of attachment/craving/desire, delusion/ignorance/misconception. This Tibetan Kila Phurba dagger we have for sale in in very good condition and is probably from the mid 20th century. Length: 28 cm (11 inches)
