WW1 Commemorative Plaque For A Fallen Soldier

A WW1 Commemorative plaque honoring fallen soldier Private Dyer J. Byrd from Ohio on March 1st 1918 in the St. Clement sector. While at a listening post a German raiding party approached him. He threw two grenades, as he turned to sound the alarm he was shot. As went down he was heard to say, “The Germans are coming in the form of a wedge. Boys, I’m dying.”  More about Private Dyer J. The plaque is made of wood and consists of a central heavy bronze plaque and four medals awarded to the fallen soldier of his service during World War One.

The plaque depicts the goddess of liberty and freedom holding a laurel wreath and a sword or baton.  Behind her are soldiers in ceremonial uniforms saluting with their rifles and fixed bayonets as the sun shines behind them.

The plaque reads:

The plaque is wood and is adorned at the top part with the great seal of the United States, Marine Corps emblems on each side. On the right a medal for Somme offensive and on the left the Pennsylvania National Guard 28th Division WW1 Service Award. Iron Plaque of Commemorating the Deutsche Legionendenkmal 1803-1816 King's German Legion which fought in the Napoleonic wars. The plaque has the following writing: Iron plaque "Legionendenkmal" 1803-1816 Cast iron memorial war plaque for the Deutsche Legion (King's German Legion) Which was formed in 1803 to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. A relief sculpture of a horse rearing above a defeated enemy - the fallen man Has lifted his shield to protect himself from the horse's hooves. The two are situated on a base that displays the Legion motto: Nec Aspera Terrent (Hardships do not deter us) above 1803-1816. The plaque is signed by H. Wedemeyer (1927, H. Wedemeyer, by Lauchhammer) Eagles on both sides say: Waterloo, Royal Scots Greys.  These were a cavalry regiment of the British Army from 1707 until 1971.  The regiment had a famous cavalry charge which broke French lines and captured the French Eagle emblem flag.   Dimensions Length: 30 cm /11.8 inches Width: 24 cm / 9.4 inches Weight: 1.4 Kg / 3 lbs.

A special bronze relief plaque of a procession of German WW1 soldiers on horseback pulling an artillery carriage with other soldiers.  The bronze work is excellent showing in high detail the soldiers, their rifles and helmets, the horses and in the background of what seems to be a bombed out town with houses with missing roofs and a damaged tree.  The work is made by Karl Ludwig Manzel (1858-1936) and is signed by him L. British 21st Army Group Headquarters WW2 Commemorative Plaque presented to Colonel James (Joe) Oliver Ewart by Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery for his role in the negotiations for the surrender of the German high command in North West Germany, Holland and Denmark. Colonel James Oliver Ewart (3 April 1917 – 1 July 1945) served towards the end of World War 2 in the British Intelligence Corps and finished his service as the second most senior intelligence staff officer in Field Marshal Montgomery's 21st Army Group during the liberation of Europe; and he would be one of the key staff at the surrender of German forces to Montgomery on 4 May 1945 on Lüneburg Heath.  Ewart died on duty of injuries he received in a road traffic accident on 1 July 1945, near the town of Melle, Germany. The plaque consists of emblems of the British 21 Army Group Headquarters, British First Army and British Second Army. This special historic plaque commemorates the role of Colonel Ewart in the surrender of the German High Command. It is most likely a one-of-a-kind piece. A Caucasus kinjal dagger made of a bone handle, leather scabbard and decorated with beautiful silver ornaments.  This is a double edged dagger with a single groove on the blade.  The upper ring around the scabbard has three letters in possibly Georgian written on it.  In Georgia where it is parts of the men's national traditional costume this dagger is called a khanjali.  The kinjal was also a dagger used by many of the different Cossack groups spread throughout the Russian empire and especially in the Caucasus region. Maine Memorial Brass Plaque commemorates the explosion and sinking of the ship in Havana harbor, Cuba, at 9:40 on the evening of February 15, 1898 causing the deaths of 250 out of 355 sailors on board.  It is this incident that triggered the Spanish-American war that spread from the Caribbean to the Philippines ending up in American dominance over those regions. USS Maine memorial brass plaque features the following writing and markings: "In Memoriam / U.S.S. Maine / Destroyed in Havana Harbor / February 15th 1898 / This tablet is cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine." The lower right corner is stamped "© C. KECK Sc. / 1913 Cast By / Jno. Williams Inc. / N.Y." The bottom edge is stamped 1305. On the back top left corner: "Tablet No 1305 / Charles Keck, Sculptor / Cast By / Jno Williams Inc. / Bronze Foundry / New York / 1913." The Dahlgren bowie knife bayonet is a Civil War era Union US Navy bayonet designed by Admiral John Dahlgren for use with the Plymouth/Whitneyville Model M1861 Rifle, and made by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee Massachusetts.  The Dahlgren Bowie bayonet's new design's intention was to replace the then-standard sword length bayonet with a more maneuverable bayonet for Navy purposes such as close quarters combat in ships, boarding actions, shore landings, and others and for use as either a traditional bayonet or a hand held edged weapon bulky enough to defend against swords and the heavy rifles used at the time. This Dahlgren Navy bowie bayonet is one of only 1800 produced between 1861-1864, and this item is marked as produced in 1862. Comes with an unoriginal scabbard. Markings: On ricasso: Side 1: USN D.R 1862. "D.R" initials are of the military inspector at the Ames plant, Daniel Reynolds.
