Two Amputated War Veterans Bronze Sculpture By Paul Thubert

Paul Thubert (1847-1933) was a British born sculpture that created here a bronze sculpture of two elderly veterans of probably World War One (maybe even before), wearing their long military coats and medals.  One man had his arm amputated and the other his leg and has his cane under his arm.  The arm amputated man is speaking into the others ear, probably another war injury which made him hard of hearing.

The details of this sculpture and excellent and convey a real story of the horrors and price of war as well as heroes that put their lives on the line for the sake of their nation.

A beautiful set of two bronze plaques commemorating the battle of Mulhouse also called the Battle of Alsace, which began on 7 August 1914 and was the opening attack of the First World War by the French Army against Germany.  The Germans counter attacked days later making the French leave the city on the 11th of August.  The plaques feature A French officer kissing an Alsatian young woman in traditional dress who throws herself in his arms.   In the background the French infantry are charging and on the right a fallen panel inscribed with DEUTSCHES REICH.  The plaques are signed on the left: Joe Descomps SCR, A Chambin Editeur, and on the right Georges Scott, 8 Aout (August) 1914. One of the plaques is on a large wooden frame and the other plaque is on a wooden desk stationary pad with 1914-1918 shown on the bottom. A bronze silver plated bell commemorating the scuttling of the WW1 German fleet at Scapa Flow off the Scotland shore.  Rear German Admiral von Reuter, command of the fleet, ordered his soldiers to deliberately sink all ships rather then have the Allies use them on 21 June 1919.  His crews opened seacocks, torpedo tubes and portholes on the ships to flood them and once again hoisted their flags of the Imperial German Navy. The bell is engraved with the German iron cross and the words: The lord of hosts is with us (psalms 46:7). The full incident can be read at the Imperial War Museum website. A rare and unique piece of history featuring a commemorative plaque presented to Marshall Ferdinand Foch, the Supreme Allied Commander during the First World War, and Georges Clemenceau, Prime Minister and Minister of War during the war.  The plaque shows all of the characteristics of World War One such as the trench warfare, airplanes and zeppelins first used in battle, firearms, helmets and digging tools.  In the center is a French soldier holding a flag that is being kissed by a woman, maybe representing the gratefulness of the French nation to its brave fighters. The plaque was presented as part of the Law of November 17th 1918, that was established to pay national tribute to the armies and their leaders who participated in World War One, the war to end all wars. The writing in the center translates to:

This rare deep sea diver knife is in very good condition, showing the crest of the manufacturer which not all models feature.  The other side of the hilt read: "Siebe Gorman and Co. Ltd. An antique Indian Nepalese Gurkha Kukri knife made with intricate metalwork of decorative beads and white metal (maybe silver) with a beautiful design of two angels, flowers and other shapes on the leather scabbard covered with red velvet.  The handle is made of yak or ox bone and is decorated as well.  metal filigree and bead decorated leather scabbards dating from the 19th century. The knives have quality hand forged single edge very sharp steel curved blades mounted with ox bone handles and accompanied with two smaller similar handled sharpening knives.  The scabbard shows very well the hand stitching and has two straps that would have connected this Gurkha kukri knife to a belt. The blade is in excellent condition and is marked: "Tempered Steel/Made In India" It is probably made in the late 19th century to early 20th century. The katar is a punch or push dagger that was used mainly in southern India.  In battle it was used as an armor piercing close combat weapon to punch through chain mail and in civilian life it was worn mainly by nobles who would hunt tigers with the katar (usually one in each hand) to prove their manhood and bravery. This katar has the characteristic V-shaped blade and H-shaped handles.  It is made of steel and silver on the scabbard which is usually hard to find.  It was made around the 1920's or a bit before. This is a rare British 1822 pattern sword from the short reign of King George IV (1820-1830) as can be seen in the royal emblem on the guard.  It is made with the distinctive Gothic hilt with fold down guard and a grip of fishskin wrapped with brass twisted wire.  These swords tend to be more delicate than other models with the folding down guard usually broken or missing.  The maker, Salter was the main sword manufacturer of that time, the blade etched with King George the Forth's emblem or crest.  This is one of the earliest pattern 1822 swords. This British royal infantry officer’s sword pattern 1822 from the reign of King George IV is in overall good condition with a slightly stained blade and in tact leather scabbard.
