Saint Barbara was an early Christian martyr worshiped by mainly Catholics who face danger of sudden and violent death at work.  She is the patron saint of artillery and explosives professions, armorers and gunsmiths, military engineers, miners and tunnelers.  This statue of Saint Barbara features the main items associated with her story: the three windowed tower, a cannon and a branch.

This statue of Saint Barbara is one of two known to be made as a special commissioned work for the Czech Skoda company.  Skoda started in 1859 as an arms manufacturing company, later a producer of bicycles, motorcycles, cars and trucks.  During World War 2 and Nazi Germany’s occupation of Czechoslovakia, the Skoda factory was under control of Reichswerke Hermann Göring and served as producers of artillery parts, aircraft, firearms and ammunition components.  This statue is thought to be presented to the Nazi officers who controlled the company in 1942.  The statue is said to be made of artillery grade metal.

The small plaque at the base reads: Skodawerke Pilsen, Kreigsjahr 1942.

It is in excellent condition.

Saint Barbara Sculpture

This Saint Barbara Skoda sculpture is one of two known to be made as a special commissioned work by the Czech Skodawerke company during World War 2.  This sculpture was most likely presented to the German officer who was in charge of the factory during the war or other dignitary allied with the Germans.  Skodawerke WW2 sculpture of Saint Barbara.

Saint Barbara is a third-century Christian saint and martyr. She is one of the most venerated saints in the Catholic Church and is the patron saint of artillerymen, military engineers, miners, and others who work with explosives because of her old legend’s association with lightning, which led to her being invoked against lightning and fire. Her feast day is December 4. She is often depicted in art holding a miniature tower, chalice and palm branch.

Why is Saint Barbara famous?

Saint Barbara is a Christian saint and martyr who is venerated by Catholics and Orthodox Christians. She is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, and her feast day is celebrated on December 4th. She is often invoked in times of danger, particularly against fire and lightning, and her emblems are towers, palm trees, and lighted candles. Her legend states that she was a young woman who was persecuted and ultimately killed by her own father for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.

Why does St Barbara hold a sword?

St. Barbara is often depicted holding a sword as a symbol of her martyrdom. The sword is said to represent her strength, courage, and willingness to die for her faith.

Why was St Barbara made a saint?

St. Barbara is the patron saint of artillerymen, miners, and others who work with explosives because of her legend. According to the story, Barbara was a young woman from Nicomedia (in present-day Turkey) who secretly became a Christian during the reign of the Roman emperor Maximian. Her father was an atheist and wanted her to marry a pagan, but she refused. When her father threatened to kill her, Barbara fled to a tower and declared her Christian faith. After he discovered her secret belief, he tried to kill her but was struck down by lightning and died. Because of this miracle, she was made a saint.
