Elliott Brothers Instruments Set

A unique collectible from the Victorian era in England.  This is an Elliot Brothers charting instruments set in a mahogany wood box which belonged to G.B. Chalon.  His name appears on a small plaque on the box and on some of the instruments inside.  The instrument set which was used either for nautical map charting, mathematics or engineering drawing includes what we think are all of the original items with a lift out tray.  This charting set includes ivory handles on some of the instruments especially the protractor (ruler) which is all in ivory.  The ivory protractor, marked: Elliot 449 Strand London, is therefore presumably made after the company moved to their Strand St. location in about 1867.  The two slots in the protractor were for a ribbon so that the naval officer or other user could wear it round his neck.

This is a fantastic antique Victorian era collectible for those who love scientific or nautical/naval/maritime items.

The Elliot Brothers company

William Elliott established his own first business at Tash Court in about 1804.  In 1854 his two sons, Frederick Henry Elliott and Charles Alfred Elliott, took over the company after their father’s death a year earlier and were renamed the company: Elliott Bros in London.  The company produced electrical instruments and measuring and surveying devices which played an early role in the development of computers in the United Kingdom as well as the expansion of the railroad system.  In 1867 they exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exhibition under the name ‘Elliott, Brothers, 449, Strand, London.— Mathematical, optical, and philosophical instruments.  The company was aquired later in the 20th century by BAE systems, one of the largest defense and aviation companies in the world.

A unique and mesmerizing piece of old world craftsmanship at its best.  This singing bird mechanical box is made by MMM (Mechanische Musikwerke Manufaktur) of Triberg Germany, the company that purchased the Karl Griesbaum company that specialized in these items from 1905-1980.  MMM continues to make the singing bird boxes with the same tools and techniques since 1990.  The box is made of plated silver or alpaca silver (nickel silver). The mechanism of this singing bird music box is all made by hand and is completely mechanical without any use of speakers or electronics.  Comes with the wooden box case. DO NOT FORCE THE LID TO OPEN OR CLOSE.  IF YOU MOVE THE BUTTON AND NOTHING HAPPENS OR IT STOPS IN THE MIDDLE IT NEEDS TO BE WINDED UP WITH THE KEY. This is a rare display of an 1899 advertisement poster from the theatre play Jeanne D'Arc played by French stage actress Sarah Bernhard, at one point in time she was considered the most famous actress in the world, and illustrated by Swiss artist Eugene Grasset, credited in introducing the Art Nouveau style to the United States.  The display features from left to right the black and white plate, the brass printing plate and the advertisement itself in full color.  This is a rare and unique find since these items are hardly sold together. The plaque at the bottom reads: Jeanne D'Arc - 1899 Vintage French Poster - Gicle'e Print This vintage French poster is an example of "Affiche Artistic", advertising Sarah Bernhardt's performance in Jeanne D'Arc.  The artist was Eugene Grasset and the poster was published in 1899. A unique item from the Vietnam war era featuring a Laotian woman bronze bust sculpture made by Nguyen Thanh Le that was presented as a gift in September 1969 to Brigadier General Homer K. Hansen by Major General Tran Van Minh, commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force).  Nguyen Thanh Le was a Vietnamese artisan, graduate of the Bien Hoa Fine Arts School, who sold her sculptures and other works of art to mainly military personnel from a shop on Thu Do Street in the former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City.  These works later found their way to the US and France as military personnel went back home. This Laotian woman bust of a young woman shows her beautiful features, unique hair style and ornate earrings. Or best offer November 4th is celebrated and commemorated in Italy as the end of World War 1, the day of Armistice at Villa Giusti.  Italy lost in WW1 over 500,000 soldiers.  This rare bronze plaque was sculpted by one of Milan's most famous sculptures in the early to mid 20th century: Egidio Boninsegna.  The memorial plaque depicts an angel carrying to a tomb a half-draped male soldier accompanies by his mourning wife and two children bidding him a final farewell and another man holding the ends of the drape.  Both the angel and the fallen soldier show deep, hollowed-out eyes, indicating the suffering and grief caused by the war. The angel is sitting on a slab with the writing Ignoto Militi, the unknown soldier.  In the background is a great memorial tomb complete with fluted columns and another frieze of mourning figures.  The artist Egidio Boninsegna is best known for the creation of numerous tombs for the Monumental Cemetery and the Musocco Cemetery in Milan. He also sculpted the monument dedicated to the Milanese painter Filippo Carcano in 1915. This November 4th Italian memorial cast bronze plaque is rare in this excellent condition.  It is fastened to a heavy wooden frame. Israeli Lee Enfield long branch No.4 MK1 T rifle scope made by Goldberg of Tel-Aviv.  This is one of the first prototypes of Israeli made rifle scope made in the late 1940's and early 1950's as Israel planned to self rely on as much weapons and weapon related material as possible and in addition smuggle and later import military surplus firearms from post WW2 Europe.  This Israeli rifle scope is made of brass and includes the original rifle mount.  The outside of the scope has patches of scratched paint, the lenses are in tact and a bit foggy and the reticle is in tact as well.  A rare and unique piece of history.
