Elliott Brothers Instruments Set

A unique collectible from the Victorian era in England.  This is an Elliot Brothers charting instruments set in a mahogany wood box which belonged to G.B. Chalon.  His name appears on a small plaque on the box and on some of the instruments inside.  The instrument set which was used either for nautical map charting, mathematics or engineering drawing includes what we think are all of the original items with a lift out tray.  This charting set includes ivory handles on some of the instruments especially the protractor (ruler) which is all in ivory.  The ivory protractor, marked: Elliot 449 Strand London, is therefore presumably made after the company moved to their Strand St. location in about 1867.  The two slots in the protractor were for a ribbon so that the naval officer or other user could wear it round his neck.

This is a fantastic antique Victorian era collectible for those who love scientific or nautical/naval/maritime items.

Description

The Elliot Brothers company

William Elliott established his own first business at Tash Court in about 1804.  In 1854 his two sons, Frederick Henry Elliott and Charles Alfred Elliott, took over the company after their father’s death a year earlier and were renamed the company: Elliott Bros in London.  The company produced electrical instruments and measuring and surveying devices which played an early role in the development of computers in the United Kingdom as well as the expansion of the railroad system.  In 1867 they exhibited at the 1867 Paris Exhibition under the name ‘Elliott, Brothers, 449, Strand, London.— Mathematical, optical, and philosophical instruments.  The company was aquired later in the 20th century by BAE systems, one of the largest defense and aviation companies in the world.

A French Trib pocket watch and a Prussian display stand commemorating the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871 featuring two kneeling captured French soldiers on each side with broken flags and spears as sign of defeat.  This unique pocket watch stand features five major places of significant battles during the war: Weissens (Weissembourg), Worth, Metz, Sedan, Strassburg, Paris with the German Iron Cross at the bottom.  The French Trib pocket watch is in working condition and dates to the early 20th century, around 1920's.  The pocket watch is hung on on a small hook from a lion's head, a wreath with 1871 in it, and fits into a larger circular wreath where the watch rests.

British 21st Army Group Headquarters WW2 Commemorative Plaque presented to Colonel James (Joe) Oliver Ewart by Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery for his role in the negotiations for the surrender of the German high command in North West Germany, Holland and Denmark. Colonel James Oliver Ewart (3 April 1917 – 1 July 1945) served towards the end of World War 2 in the British Intelligence Corps and finished his service as the second most senior intelligence staff officer in Field Marshal Montgomery's 21st Army Group during the liberation of Europe; and he would be one of the key staff at the surrender of German forces to Montgomery on 4 May 1945 on Lüneburg Heath.  Ewart died on duty of injuries he received in a road traffic accident on 1 July 1945, near the town of Melle, Germany. The plaque consists of emblems of the British 21 Army Group Headquarters, British First Army and British Second Army. This special historic plaque commemorates the role of Colonel Ewart in the surrender of the German High Command. It is most likely a one-of-a-kind piece. Israeli Lee Enfield long branch No.4 MK1 T rifle scope made by Goldberg of Tel-Aviv.  This is one of the first prototypes of Israeli made rifle scope made in the late 1940's and early 1950's as Israel planned to self rely on as much weapons and weapon related material as possible and in addition smuggle and later import military surplus firearms from post WW2 Europe.  This Israeli rifle scope is made of brass and includes the original rifle mount.  The outside of the scope has patches of scratched paint, the lenses are in tact and a bit foggy and the reticle is in tact as well.  A rare and unique piece of history.
