A unique item from the Vietnam war era featuring a Laotian woman bronze bust sculpture made by Nguyen Thanh Le that was presented as a gift in September 1969 to Brigadier General Homer K. Hansen by Major General Tran Van Minh, commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force).  Nguyen Thanh Le was a Vietnamese artisan, graduate of the Bien Hoa Fine Arts School, who sold her sculptures and other works of art to mainly military personnel from a shop on Thu Do Street in the former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City.  These works later found their way to the US and France as military personnel went back home.

This Laotian woman bust of a young woman shows her beautiful features, unique hair style and ornate earrings.

Description

General Hansen served in Vietnam starting in May 1968 as commander, 3d Tactical Fighter Wing, Bien Hoa Air Base. In May 1969 he was appointed director, Tactical Air Control Center, Headquarters Seventh Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Airfield.  During his Vietnam tour he flew 230 combat missions in F-100, F-4 and A-37 aircraft.

In November 1967 Tran Van Minh was promoted to Brigadier-General and commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force) and to Major-General in 1968.  Minh would be the longest-serving commander of the VNAF holding command from 1967 until the Fall of Saigon in April 1975 where he was evacuated and live in the US until his death in 1997.

Warsaw Ghetto is a cast bronze brutalist style sculpture by Kenneth Treister, architect of the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach in Florida.  The sculpture is a depiction of the famous photograph in which the last surviving Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising were taken out of a bunker and surrendered to the Nazi troops.  The Warsaw Ghetto uprising occurred from the 19th of April to the 16th of May 1943, in which about 13,000 Jews were killed and German casualties were 150.  The photograph has been one of the most iconic depicting the Holocaust and one of the most influential in the 20th century. This Warsaw Ghetto sculpture by Kenneth Treister is of the first and original batch of bronze plaques signed in the back and is 122/150 made on August 1969. L'Armurier or The Arm's Maker by Henryk Kossowski Jr. is a beautiful French bronze sculpture depicting a swordsmith inspecting his work and wondering about its quality.  The statue is beautifully cast and detailed as were many of the works done at the Siot-Decauville and sculpted by Henryk Kossowski Jr. who was active during the years of 1880-1915.  This swordsmith sculpture is featured in the book “Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, Vol. II“ on page 379, where it is identified as “L'Armurier“ or “The Arm's Maker“. It is bronze with golden gild and shown with the edge of his work bench and clamp beside his leg.  The sword itself is in tact, which in many cases is either broken or missing. The sculpture is signed by the artist in the base "H. Kossowski" and marked by the Siot-Decauville foundry "II 251".
