A unique item from the Vietnam war era featuring a Laotian woman bronze bust sculpture made by Nguyen Thanh Le that was presented as a gift in September 1969 to Brigadier General Homer K. Hansen by Major General Tran Van Minh, commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force).  Nguyen Thanh Le was a Vietnamese artisan, graduate of the Bien Hoa Fine Arts School, who sold her sculptures and other works of art to mainly military personnel from a shop on Thu Do Street in the former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City.  These works later found their way to the US and France as military personnel went back home.

This Laotian woman bust of a young woman shows her beautiful features, unique hair style and ornate earrings.

Description

General Hansen served in Vietnam starting in May 1968 as commander, 3d Tactical Fighter Wing, Bien Hoa Air Base. In May 1969 he was appointed director, Tactical Air Control Center, Headquarters Seventh Air Force, Tan Son Nhut Airfield.  During his Vietnam tour he flew 230 combat missions in F-100, F-4 and A-37 aircraft.

In November 1967 Tran Van Minh was promoted to Brigadier-General and commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force) and to Major-General in 1968.  Minh would be the longest-serving commander of the VNAF holding command from 1967 until the Fall of Saigon in April 1975 where he was evacuated and live in the US until his death in 1997.

Warsaw Ghetto is a cast bronze brutalist style sculpture by Kenneth Treister, architect of the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach in Florida.  The sculpture is a depiction of the famous photograph in which the last surviving Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising were taken out of a bunker and surrendered to the Nazi troops.  The Warsaw Ghetto uprising occurred from the 19th of April to the 16th of May 1943, in which about 13,000 Jews were killed and German casualties were 150.  The photograph has been one of the most iconic depicting the Holocaust and one of the most influential in the 20th century. The Knight of Verona is a gilded bronze sculpture of "Cangrande I della Scalla", an Italian nobleman, belonging to the della Scala family which ruled Verona from 1308 until 1387.  Della Scalla was an acclaimed warrior and autocrat becoming sole ruler of Verona in 1311 to his death in 1329.  The Knight of Verona statue features Cangrande with his helmet, armor and drawn sword on his horse which is draped in cloth on a marble base.  The sculpture was made by Hans Muller of Austria (1873-1937) and signed, famous for his bronze sculptures of famous individuals as well as everyday life.  The original statue is currently at the Castelvecchio castle, in Verona, Italy.
