A trench art knife or letter opener made in 1914 probably during the siege of the fortified city of Namur in Belgium between August 20-25, 1914, when German and Austro-Hungarian forces fought and defeated the defending Belgium and French forces.  Like many other trench art items this knife is made of an artillery shell fragment which can be seen from the ridges in the handle.  On one side of the ricasso "1914" is etched and on the other side "Namur" is etched, hence associating this trench art knife to the time period of the siege. The knife length is 17 cm (6.70 inches).

This rare deep sea diver knife is in very good condition, showing the crest of the manufacturer which not all models feature.  The other side of the hilt read: "Siebe Gorman and Co. Ltd. The Dahlgren bowie knife bayonet is a Civil War era Union US Navy bayonet designed by Admiral John Dahlgren for use with the Plymouth/Whitneyville Model M1861 Rifle, and made by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee Massachusetts.  The Dahlgren Bowie bayonet's new design's intention was to replace the then-standard sword length bayonet with a more maneuverable bayonet for Navy purposes such as close quarters combat in ships, boarding actions, shore landings, and others and for use as either a traditional bayonet or a hand held edged weapon bulky enough to defend against swords and the heavy rifles used at the time. This Dahlgren Navy bowie bayonet is one of only 1800 produced between 1861-1864, and this item is marked as produced in 1862. Comes with an unoriginal scabbard. Markings: On ricasso: Side 1: USN D.R 1862. "D.R" initials are of the military inspector at the Ames plant, Daniel Reynolds. The katar is a punch or push dagger that was used mainly in southern India.  In battle it was used as an armor piercing close combat weapon to punch through chain mail and in civilian life it was worn mainly by nobles who would hunt tigers with the katar (usually one in each hand) to prove their manhood and bravery. This katar has the characteristic V-shaped blade and H-shaped handles.  It is made of steel and silver on the scabbard which is usually hard to find.  It was made around the 1920's or a bit before.
