A trench art knife or letter opener made in 1914 probably during the siege of the fortified city of Namur in Belgium between August 20-25, 1914, when German and Austro-Hungarian forces fought and defeated the defending Belgium and French forces.  Like many other trench art items this knife is made of an artillery shell fragment which can be seen from the ridges in the handle.  On one side of the ricasso "1914" is etched and on the other side "Namur" is etched, hence associating this trench art knife to the time period of the siege. The knife length is 17 cm (6.70 inches).

This beautiful gun grade metal sculpture of Joan of Arc in an art nouveau style shows in great detail her armor and chain of armor suit beneath and her beautiful face expression.  She is wearing a golden laurel, holding a sword in her right hand and spear in her left.  At the base her helmet and crossbow can be seen. The Dahlgren bowie knife bayonet is a Civil War era Union US Navy bayonet designed by Admiral John Dahlgren for use with the Plymouth/Whitneyville Model M1861 Rifle, and made by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee Massachusetts.  The Dahlgren Bowie bayonet's new design's intention was to replace the then-standard sword length bayonet with a more maneuverable bayonet for Navy purposes such as close quarters combat in ships, boarding actions, shore landings, and others and for use as either a traditional bayonet or a hand held edged weapon bulky enough to defend against swords and the heavy rifles used at the time. This Dahlgren Navy bowie bayonet is one of only 1800 produced between 1861-1864, and this item is marked as produced in 1862. Comes with an unoriginal scabbard. Markings: On ricasso: Side 1: USN D.R 1862. "D.R" initials are of the military inspector at the Ames plant, Daniel Reynolds.
