Paul also named Saul (Shaul in Hebrew) of Tarsus (In today’s Southern Turkey), commonly known as Paul the Apostle and Saint Paul was a Christian apostle (c. 5 – c. 64/65 AD) who spread the teachings of Jesus in the first-century world. For his contributions towards the New Testament, he is generally regarded as one of the most important figures of the Apostolic Age, and he also founded several Christian communities in Asia Minor and Europe from the mid-40s to the mid-50s AD. According to legend, Paul was beheaded as part of the executions of Christians ordered by the Roman emperor Nero following the great fire in the city in 64 CE. Roman Emperor Constantine I founded Saint Paul’s basilica over the burial place of Paul of Tarsus, where it was said that, after the apostle’s execution, his followers erected a memorial, called a cella memoriae.
