Knight of Verona by Hans Muller

The Knight of Verona is a gilded bronze sculpture of “Cangrande I della Scalla”, an Italian nobleman, belonging to the della Scala family which ruled Verona from 1308 until 1387.  Della Scalla was an acclaimed warrior and autocrat becoming sole ruler of Verona in 1311 to his death in 1329.  The Knight of Verona statue features Cangrande with his helmet, armor and drawn sword on his horse which is draped in cloth on a marble base.  The sculpture was made by Hans Muller of Austria (1873-1937) and signed, famous for his bronze sculptures of famous individuals as well as everyday life.  The original statue is currently at the Castelvecchio castle, in Verona, Italy.

The Motherland Calls or in literal translation from Russian: Homeland-Mother Is Calling! is a statue of a woman stepping forward with a raised sword representing the Soviet or Russian Motherland calling on its sons and daughters to repulse the enemy and return to the attack.  This Soviet era sculpture which started construction in May 1959 and completed on 15 October 1967 is the compositional center of the monument-ensemble "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia.  It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin, and declared the tallest statue in the world in 1967 when complete.  At 85 m (279 ft), it is the tallest statue in Europe, the tallest outside of Asia and the tallest statue (excluding pedestals) of a woman in the world. This Motherland Calls sculpture by Yevgeny Vuchetich is a beautiful representation of Soviet art with an art nuevo twist. Or best offer Saint Barbara was an early Christian martyr worshiped by mainly Catholics who face danger of sudden and violent death at work.  She is the patron saint of artillery and explosives professions, armorers and gunsmiths, military engineers, miners and tunnelers.  This statue of Saint Barbara features the main items associated with her story: the three windowed tower, a cannon and a branch. This statue of Saint Barbara is one of two known to be made as a special commissioned work for the Czech Skoda company.  Skoda started in 1859 as an arms manufacturing company, later a producer of bicycles, motorcycles, cars and trucks.  During World War 2 and Nazi Germany's occupation of Czechoslovakia, the Skoda factory was under control of Reichswerke Hermann Göring and served as producers of artillery parts, aircraft, firearms and ammunition components.  This statue is thought to be presented to the Nazi officers who controlled the company in 1942.  The statue is said to be made of artillery grade metal. The small plaque at the base reads: Skodawerke Pilsen, Kreigsjahr 1942. It is in excellent condition. The Dying Gaul sculpture is an ancient Roman marble statue now in the Capitoline Museum in Rome and it is a copy of a now lost sculpture from the Hellenistic period (323-31 BC) thought to have been made in bronze and may have been commissioned at some time between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Galatians, the Celtic or Gaulish people of parts of Anatolia (modern Turkey).  The original sculptor is believed to have been Epigonus, a court sculptor of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon.  The sculpture of the Dying Gaul is also called The Dying Gladiator, The Dying Galatian, Galata Morente in Italian. The sculpture is beautiful in details showing the bleeding wound of the gladiator in his right side ribs from a sword, the veins in his arms, his hair and his overall musculature. Gaulois by Adolphe Jean Lavergne bronze sculpture of ancient Celtic warrior.  This bronze sculpture of a Gaul warrior, features the Celtic fighter with his helmet, holding his sword in one hand and a leaf in another, axe hanging from his belt and a fur garment covering his groin.  A beautiful depiction of this ancient French Celtic warrior by French sculptor Adolphe Jean Lavergne (1852-1901).  This warrior might be a depiction of Vercingetorix (80 – 46 BC) the Gallic king and chieftain of the Arverni tribe who united the Gauls in a failed revolt against Roman forces during the last phase of Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars.  After surrendering to Caesar and spending almost six years in prison, he was executed in Rome.
