Charles Augustus Lindbergh (February 4, 1902 – August 26, 1974) is known for being the first aviator to complete a non-stop trans-Atlantic flight. Charles Lindbergh was an American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist. In May 1927, he went from obscurity as a U.S. Air Mail pilot to instantaneous world fame by winning the Orteig Prize for making a nonstop flight from New York City to Paris. Lindbergh covered the 33 1⁄2-hour, 3,600-statute-mile (5,800 km) flight alone in a purpose-built, single-engine Ryan monoplane, the Spirit of St. Louis. Lindbergh achieved in that flight three first time ever feats: the first solo trans-Atlantic flight, the first trans-Atlantic flight between two major cities, and the longest trans-Atlantic flight by almost 2,000 miles, making his flight a cornerstone achievement and a turning point in aviation history and development. He was later known for being against US involvement in WW2 but later aided the war effort by becoming an air force consultant after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
