Central Medallion From The Milton Shield

A fantastic reproduction of the central medallion of the Milton Shield depicting the archangel Raphael recounting to Adam and Eve the defeat of the rebel angels as they sit in the garden of Eden.  The relief is very elaborate, beautifully showing the bodies of Raphael, Adam and Eve and the surrounding vegetation around them of the garden of Eden.  Bronze with a wooden frame and small plaque with the artworks info.  The original Milton Shield was made by Leonard Morel-Ladeuil for Elkington & Co. of Birmingham.  The shield is illustrated with scenes from from Milton’s Paradise Lost.  The original shield became one of the most celebrated pieces shown at the Paris Exhibition of 1867.

Description

The original Milton Shield features in the central medallion the Archangel Raphael recounting to Adam and Eve the defeat of the rebel angels; in the other divisions the events of the contest; and below the Archangel Michael vanquishing Satan and the figures of Sin and Death. Above may be seen among other objects the signs of the Zodiac. The original was exhibited by Messrs. The Dying Gaul Or Dying Gladiator

The Dying Gaul sculpture is an ancient Roman marble statue now in the Capitoline Museum in Rome and it is a copy of a now lost sculpture from the Hellenistic period (323-31 BC) thought to have been made in bronze and may have been commissioned at some time between 230 and 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon to celebrate his victory over the Galatians, the Celtic or Gaulish people of parts of Anatolia (modern Turkey).  The original sculptor is believed to have been Epigonus, a court sculptor of the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon.  The sculpture of the Dying Gaul is also called The Dying Gladiator, The Dying Galatian, Galata Morente in Italian. The sculpture is beautiful in details showing the bleeding wound of the gladiator in his right side ribs from a sword, the veins in his arms, his hair and his overall musculature. The base features an inscription: "Galata Morente/After Pietro Angeletti/1758-1786" Dimensions: Height: 31 cm / 12.20 inches Width: 60 cm / 23.62 inches Weight: 11.9 Kg / 26.23 lbs.

November 4th WW1 Memorial Plaque By Egidio Boninsegna

Or best offer November 4th is celebrated and commemorated in Italy as the end of World War 1, the day of Armistice at Villa Giusti.  Italy lost in WW1 over 500,000 soldiers.  This rare bronze plaque was sculpted by one of Milan's most famous sculptures in the early to mid 20th century: Egidio Boninsegna.  The memorial plaque depicts an angel carrying to a tomb a half-draped male soldier accompanies by his mourning wife and two children bidding him a final farewell and another man holding the ends of the drape.  Both the angel and the fallen soldier show deep, hollowed-out eyes, indicating the suffering and grief caused by the war. The angel is sitting on a slab with the writing Ignoto Militi, the unknown soldier.  In the background is a great memorial tomb complete with fluted columns and another frieze of mourning figures.  The artist Egidio Boninsegna is best known for the creation of numerous tombs for the Monumental Cemetery and the Musocco Cemetery in Milan. He also sculpted the monument dedicated to the Milanese painter Filippo Carcano in 1915. This November 4th Italian memorial cast bronze plaque is rare in this excellent condition.  It is fastened to a heavy wooden frame. A unique item from the Vietnam war era featuring a Laotian woman bronze bust sculpture made by Nguyen Thanh Le that was presented as a gift in September 1969 to Brigadier General Homer K. Hansen by Major General Tran Van Minh, commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force).  Nguyen Thanh Le was a Vietnamese artisan, graduate of the Bien Hoa Fine Arts School, who sold her sculptures and other works of art to mainly military personnel from a shop on Thu Do Street in the former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City.  These works later found their way to the US and France as military personnel went back home. This Laotian woman bust of a young woman shows her beautiful features, unique hair style and ornate earrings.
