Description

The shield has intricate details, 6 flags on the top divided by the Kings crown, 6 flags symbolizing the six colonies incorporating the Republic of South Africa.  Above a ribbon that reads “CAPE COLONY NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION”. Below that, the Cape Colony (AKA Cape of Good Hope) coat of arms with female herald supporters, blowing trumpets. To the right and left Zulu shields and spears above crossed rifles, all above a shooting range scene, with seated adjudicator and spectator with binoculars, surrounded by laurel wreath. The base has a cartouche which reads “INTER COLONIAL GRAND CHALLENGE SHIELD”.

First produced by Mappin & Webb between 1902 and 1910. Even though the Cape Colony was renamed the Cape Province in 1910 after the Union of South Africa, it appears the National Rifle Association continued to use the same shield for the annual challenge, with the supplier changed to Green & Co, who produced between 1904 and 1986. A few of these shields are known from different years, this was was made in 1930.
