Battle of Mulhouse & Alsace Liberation WW1 Plaques

A beautiful set of two bronze plaques commemorating the battle of Mulhouse also called the Battle of Alsace, which began on 7 August 1914 and was the opening attack of the First World War by the French Army against Germany.  The Germans counter attacked days later making the French leave the city on the 11th of August.  The plaques feature A French officer kissing an Alsatian young woman in traditional dress who throws herself in his arms.   In the background the French infantry are charging and on the right a fallen panel inscribed with DEUTSCHES REICH.  The plaques are signed on the left: Joe Descomps SCR, A Chambin Editeur, and on the right Georges Scott, 8 Aout (August) 1914.

One of the plaques is on a large wooden frame and the other plaque is on a wooden desk stationary pad with 1914-1918 shown on the bottom.

Two foundry workers bronze plaque featuring two bare chested men pouring liquid metal, or other substance, into a cast. The piece is of the German 1920's style of art deco and art nouveau influences. This antique bronze plaque is not signed but most likely made by German artist Heinrich Friedrich Moshage (1896 - 1968) who created many foundry and labor featured works, influenced by his father who was a foundry worker. A set of two British War Savings Campaign plaques of the larger size of 57x33cm, one of Salute The Soldier Week 1944 and Wings For Victory Week 1943.  These are very rarely sold together as a set, in this size and this condition.  The plaques were made by De La Rue Plastics of molded Urea Formaldehyde / White Bakelite.  De Le Rue plastics company of Walthamstow London made the War Savings Campaign plaques for the War Office, and were presented to organizations and various other groups in recognition of efforts made to War Savings once attained certain savings targets. They were not awarded to individuals, so could often be seen displayed in village halls / offices, and community buildings.  The aim was to sponsor military equipment by the homefront civilian community.  Each county was set a target of money to raise and local civic leaders were presented with plaques as a reward for the fund raising efforts. The first plaque is the For Freedom - Salute The Soldier Week of 1944 featuring a British infantry soldier holding his Lee Enfield rifle with mounted bayonet showing explosions and aircraft in the background going to battle.  These were presented by the War Office. The second plaque is the Per Ardua Ad Astra - Wings For Victory Week of 1943 presented by the Air Ministry.  Per Ardua Ad Astra is a Latin phrase meaning "through adversity to the stars" which is the moto of the Royal Air Force.  This plaque features a winged warrior fighting a three-headed monster representing the enemy Axis Powers of Germany, Italy and Japan.  Below that the letter V (for Victory) is shown 5 times in Morse code. Both plaques are in excellent condition!

Or best offer November 4th is celebrated and commemorated in Italy as the end of World War 1, the day of Armistice at Villa Giusti.  Italy lost in WW1 over 500,000 soldiers.  This rare bronze plaque was sculpted by one of Milan's most famous sculptures in the early to mid 20th century: Egidio Boninsegna.  The memorial plaque depicts an angel carrying to a tomb a half-draped male soldier accompanies by his mourning wife and two children bidding him a final farewell and another man holding the ends of the drape.  Both the angel and the fallen soldier show deep, hollowed-out eyes, indicating the suffering and grief caused by the war. The angel is sitting on a slab with the writing Ignoto Militi, the unknown soldier.  In the background is a great memorial tomb complete with fluted columns and another frieze of mourning figures.  The artist Egidio Boninsegna is best known for the creation of numerous tombs for the Monumental Cemetery and the Musocco Cemetery in Milan. He also sculpted the monument dedicated to the Milanese painter Filippo Carcano in 1915. This November 4th Italian memorial cast bronze plaque is rare in this excellent condition.  It is fastened to a heavy wooden frame. Or best offer Saint Barbara was an early Christian martyr worshiped by mainly Catholics who face danger of sudden and violent death at work.  She is the patron saint of artillery and explosives professions, armorers and gunsmiths, military engineers, miners and tunnelers.  This statue of Saint Barbara features the main items associated with her story: the three windowed tower, a cannon and a branch. This statue of Saint Barbara is one of two known to be made as a special commissioned work for the Czech Skoda company.  Skoda started in 1859 as an arms manufacturing company, later a producer of bicycles, motorcycles, cars and trucks.  During World War 2 and Nazi Germany's occupation of Czechoslovakia, the Skoda factory was under control of Reichswerke Hermann Göring and served as producers of artillery parts, aircraft, firearms and ammunition components.  This statue is thought to be presented to the Nazi officers who controlled the company in 1942.  The statue is said to be made of artillery grade metal. The small plaque at the base reads: Skodawerke Pilsen, Kreigsjahr 1942. It is in excellent condition. A WW1 Commemorative plaque honoring fallen soldier Private Dyer J. Byrd from Ohio on March 1st 1918 in the St. Clement sector. While at a listening post a German raiding party approached him. He threw two grenades, as he turned to sound the alarm he was shot. As went down he was heard to say, “The Germans are coming in the form of a wedge. Boys, I’m dying.”  More about Private Dyer J. Byrd. The plaque is made of wood and consists of a central heavy bronze plaque and four medals awarded to the fallen soldier of his service during World War One. The plaque depicts the goddess of liberty and freedom holding a laurel wreath and a sword or baton.  Behind her are soldiers in ceremonial uniforms saluting with their rifles and fixed bayonets as the sun shines behind them. The plaque reads: 1917 World War 1918 In Memory Of Private Dyer J. This U.S.S. Maine Memorial Brass Plaque commemorates the explosion and sinking of the ship in Havana harbor, Cuba, at 9:40 on the evening of February 15, 1898 causing the deaths of 250 out of 355 sailors on board.  It is this incident that triggered the Spanish-American war that spread from the Caribbean to the Philippines ending up in American dominance over those regions. USS Maine memorial brass plaque features the following writing and markings: "In Memoriam / U.S.S. Maine / Destroyed in Havana Harbor / February 15th 1898 / This tablet is cast from metal recovered from the U.S.S. Maine." The lower right corner is stamped "© C. KECK Sc. / 1913 Cast By / Jno. Williams Inc. / N.Y." The bottom edge is stamped 1305. On the back top left corner: "Tablet No 1305 / Charles Keck, Sculptor / Cast By / Jno Williams Inc. / Bronze Foundry / New York / 1913." British 21st Army Group Headquarters WW2 Commemorative Plaque presented to Colonel James (Joe) Oliver Ewart by Field Marshal Sir Bernard Law Montgomery for his role in the negotiations for the surrender of the German high command in North West Germany, Holland and Denmark. Colonel James Oliver Ewart (3 April 1917 – 1 July 1945) served towards the end of World War 2 in the British Intelligence Corps and finished his service as the second most senior intelligence staff officer in Field Marshal Montgomery's 21st Army Group during the liberation of Europe; and he would be one of the key staff at the surrender of German forces to Montgomery on 4 May 1945 on Lüneburg Heath.  Ewart died on duty of injuries he received in a road traffic accident on 1 July 1945, near the town of Melle, Germany. The plaque consists of emblems of the British 21 Army Group Headquarters, British First Army and British Second Army. This special historic plaque commemorates the role of Colonel Ewart in the surrender of the German High Command. It is most likely a one-of-a-kind piece.
