Battle of Mulhouse & Alsace Liberation WW1 Plaques

A beautiful set of two bronze plaques commemorating the battle of Mulhouse also called the Battle of Alsace, which began on 7 August 1914 and was the opening attack of the First World War by the French Army against Germany.  The Germans counter attacked days later making the French leave the city on the 11th of August.  The plaques feature A French officer kissing an Alsatian young woman in traditional dress who throws herself in his arms.   In the background the French infantry are charging and on the right a fallen panel inscribed with DEUTSCHES REICH.  The plaques are signed on the left: Joe Descomps SCR, A Chambin Editeur, and on the right Georges Scott, 8 Aout (August) 1914.

One of the plaques is on a large wooden frame and the other plaque is on a wooden desk stationary pad with 1914-1918 shown on the bottom.

Notepad plaque: 11 cm x 21.5 cm (4.3 inches x 8.4 inches)

This plaque commemorates the first successful rice planting in the Charleston South Carolina colony in the 1670's starting the rice growing culture of the South known as Madagascar gold.  The plaque was approved by the Historic Commission of Charleston South Carolina.  The plaque is attached to a thick slice of an olive tree trunk. British War Savings Campaign Plaque Set

A set of two British War Savings Campaign plaques of the larger size of 57x33cm, one of Salute The Soldier Week 1944 and Wings For Victory Week 1943.  These are very rarely sold together as a set, in this size and this condition.  The plaques were made by De La Rue Plastics of molded Urea Formaldehyde / White Bakelite.  De Le Rue plastics company of Walthamstow London made the War Savings Campaign plaques for the War Office, and were presented to organizations and various other groups in recognition of efforts made to War Savings once attained certain savings targets. They were not awarded to individuals, so could often be seen displayed in village halls / offices, and community buildings.  The aim was to sponsor military equipment by the homefront civilian community.  Each county was set a target of money to raise and local civic leaders were presented with plaques as a reward for the fund raising efforts. The first plaque is the For Freedom - Salute The Soldier Week of 1944 featuring a British infantry soldier holding his Lee Enfield rifle with mounted bayonet showing explosions and aircraft in the background going to battle.  These were presented by the War Office. The second plaque is the Per Ardua Ad Astra - Wings For Victory Week of 1943 presented by the Air Ministry.  Per Ardua Ad Astra is a Latin phrase meaning "through adversity to the stars" which is the moto of the Royal Air Force.  This plaque features a winged warrior fighting a three-headed monster representing the enemy Axis Powers of Germany, Italy and Japan.  Below that the letter V (for Victory) is shown 5 times in Morse code. Both plaques are in excellent condition!

Commemorative plaque for Lieutenant De Lancy J. Colvin of Jackson, Michigan, a World War One hero killed in action in France in 1918. The plaque is wood and is adorned at the top part with the great seal of the United States, Marine Corps emblems on each side. On the right a medal for Somme offensive and on the left the Pennsylvania National Guard 28th Division WW1 Service Award. At the bottom a Rene Lalique WW1 Journee Du Poilu 1915 bronze cross.  The "Journée du Poilu" medal was created as part of a fundraising campaign to support French soldiers and war orphans.  The center plaque reads: Presented by the county of Jackson Michigan To Lieutenant De Lancy J. Colvil (We believe that there was a mistake in the printing of the plaque, since no Colvil existed with that name from Jackson Michigan) In great appreciation Of the services rendered In the World War 1917-1918   Dimensions: Height: 35 cm / 13.77 inches Width: 24 cm / 9.44 inches

Iron Plaque of Commemorating the Deutsche Legionendenkmal 1803-1816 King's German Legion which fought in the Napoleonic wars. The plaque has the following writing: Iron plaque "Legionendenkmal" 1803-1816 Cast iron memorial war plaque for the Deutsche Legion (King's German Legion) Which was formed in 1803 to fight in the Napoleonic Wars. A relief sculpture of a horse rearing above a defeated enemy - the fallen man Has lifted his shield to protect himself from the horse's hooves. The two are situated on a base that displays the Legion motto: Nec Aspera Terrent (Hardships do not deter us) above 1803-1816. The plaque is signed by H. Wedemeyer (1927, H. Wedemeyer, by Lauchhammer) Eagles on both sides say: Waterloo, Royal Scots Greys.  These were a cavalry regiment of the British Army from 1707 until 1971.  The regiment had a famous cavalry charge which broke French lines and captured the French Eagle emblem flag.   Dimensions Length: 30 cm /11.8 inches Width: 24 cm / 9.4 inches Weight: 1.4 Kg / 3 lbs.
