A unique item from the Vietnam war era featuring a Laotian woman bronze bust sculpture made by Nguyen Thanh Le that was presented as a gift in September 1969 to Brigadier General Homer K. Hansen by Major General Tran Van Minh, commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force).  Nguyen Thanh Le was a Vietnamese artisan, graduate of the Bien Hoa Fine Arts School, who sold her sculptures and other works of art to mainly military personnel from a shop on Thu Do Street in the former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City.  These works later found their way to the US and France as military personnel went back home. This Laotian woman bust of a young woman shows her beautiful features, unique hair style and ornate earrings. This unique tribal weapon is a headhunter's mandau knife set made and used by the Dayak people living in Borneo (Kalimantan in Indonesian), Indonesia.  This mandau knife was used in the headhunting ceremony, where after tribes attached other tribes, they gathered the heads of their enemies to be used in various festivities.  The Mandau knife is both a work of art in itself and a weapon. It consists of a long knife with a dear horn for the handle which is carved ornately and strands of hair (human?).  The scabbard is made of two pieces of wood bound together with rattan and other natural vegetation.  The smaller knife fitted to a long wooden stick which is also decorated, was used to take out the brain out of the skull and other soft tissue of the head as well as sharpening, carving and other general use. A bronze silver plated bell commemorating the scuttling of the WW1 German fleet at Scapa Flow off the Scotland shore.  Rear German Admiral von Reuter, command of the fleet, ordered his soldiers to deliberately sink all ships rather then have the Allies use them on 21 June 1919.  His crews opened seacocks, torpedo tubes and portholes on the ships to flood them and once again hoisted their flags of the Imperial German Navy. The bell is engraved with the German iron cross and the words: The lord of hosts is with us (psalms 46:7). The full incident can be read at the Imperial War Museum website.
