A set of three Thephanom statues made of bronze and covered in gold leaf.  In Thai Buddhist mythology the Thephanom are angels or deities who are temple protectors and guardians.  The Thepanom first came to earth when Buddha reached enlightenment becoming his protector, guardians of religious temples and artifacts such as scrolls.

Japanese Samurai Bajo Jingasa (Riding Battle Hat)

Samurai Bajo Jingasa (Riding Battle Hat) were worn mainly by officers a the end of the Sengoku period (1467-1615) and through the Edo period (1603-1868) and a little after.  Traditionally a defensive helmet, they were allegedly first crafted from wood, leather, lacquered rawhide, then iron and later steel.  The combination of these elements provided a good head protection against sword blows.  The bajo-gasa jingasa are shaped like low round hills, believed to decrease wind resistance while on horseback.  The inside was padded with a cushion liner secured by ribbons that would be tied and secured under the chin. The Jingasa were traditionally lacquered in black and would typically bear the mon (crest) of their clan or that of their unit, allowing forces to be easily identified in the battlefield and from afar.  These mon were often painted in gold color like in this bajogasa for sale. The Samurai bajo-jingasa here is in excellent condition showing the mon (crest) of the Maru Ni Tsuru Gashiwa. It is probably from the late Edo period (mid 19th century).   Dimensions: about 36 cm x 34 cm (14.17 x 13.38 inches)

The Motherland Calls or in literal translation from Russian: Homeland-Mother Is Calling! is a statue of a woman stepping forward with a raised sword representing the Soviet or Russian Motherland calling on its sons and daughters to repulse the enemy and return to the attack.  This Soviet era sculpture which started construction in May 1959 and completed on 15 October 1967 is the compositional center of the monument-ensemble "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia.  It was designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and structural engineer Nikolai Nikitin, and declared the tallest statue in the world in 1967 when complete.  At 85 m (279 ft), it is the tallest statue in Europe, the tallest outside of Asia and the tallest statue (excluding pedestals) of a woman in the world. This Motherland Calls sculpture by Yevgeny Vuchetich is a beautiful representation of Soviet art with an art nuevo twist. A unique item from the Vietnam war era featuring a Laotian woman bronze bust sculpture made by Nguyen Thanh Le that was presented as a gift in September 1969 to Brigadier General Homer K. Hansen by Major General Tran Van Minh, commander of the VNAF (South Vietnam Air Force).  Nguyen Thanh Le was a Vietnamese artisan, graduate of the Bien Hoa Fine Arts School, who sold her sculptures and other works of art to mainly military personnel from a shop on Thu Do Street in the former Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City.  These works later found their way to the US and France as military personnel went back home. This Laotian woman bust of a young woman shows her beautiful features, unique hair style and ornate earrings. Or best offer November 4th is celebrated and commemorated in Italy as the end of World War 1, the day of Armistice at Villa Giusti.  Italy lost in WW1 over 500,000 soldiers.  This rare bronze plaque was sculpted by one of Milan's most famous sculptures in the early to mid 20th century: Egidio Boninsegna.  The memorial plaque depicts an angel carrying to a tomb a half-draped male soldier accompanies by his mourning wife and two children bidding him a final farewell and another man holding the ends of the drape.  Both the angel and the fallen soldier show deep, hollowed-out eyes, indicating the suffering and grief caused by the war. The angel is sitting on a slab with the writing Ignoto Militi, the unknown soldier.  In the background is a great memorial tomb complete with fluted columns and another frieze of mourning figures.  The artist Egidio Boninsegna is best known for the creation of numerous tombs for the Monumental Cemetery and the Musocco Cemetery in Milan. He also sculpted the monument dedicated to the Milanese painter Filippo Carcano in 1915. This November 4th Italian memorial cast bronze plaque is rare in this excellent condition.  It is fastened to a heavy wooden frame. Beautiful Pompeian Bronze Company Bookends of the "The Sculptor" from 1920's in art deco/nouveau style.  These bookends were made by the Pompeian Bronze Company of Brooklyn, NY during the 1920's.  They copyrighted this set as named "The Sculptor" in 1921.  Each bookend features an ancient Greek style nude figure wearing the traditional cloth and holding a mallet in his right hand. These bookends are made probably of spelter and are in very good condition considering that they are now 100 years old.
