Original US 1905/1906 experimental saber by Ames Sword Company in Massachusetts. The bird-head like grip allowed for a better grip especially while riding. A.S. Co., ordnance bomb and 1906 on one side of the ricasso and US on the other side. The grip is made of sharkskin with the wires wrapped around. A bit of damage on the bottom of the grip where a small piece of sharkskin has been taken off. The blade is in good condition with blemishes from age since this piece is more than 100 years old. The scabbard is probably made of pig skin and has shrunk over time exposing the wooden pieces constructing the scabbard. The fact that this sword comes with its scabbard is very rare.

Description

US 1905/1906 experimental saber by Ames Sword Company in Massachusetts. A total of 1316 of the sabers were produced for testing between Ames and the Springfield Armory, and were widely distributed for testing between 5 cavalry regiments, 6 infantry regiments, 3 artillery regiments, and a few in the Engineer, Signal Corps and Staff units. Testing began about August of 1906 and continued until November of 1908, and further testing of sabers incorporating modifications recommended during the trials was authorized by the Acting Secretary of War in August 1909. Though several prototypes with various of the recommended changes were produced, the program died out in early 1910.

The M-1905/06 scabbard is made of wood, covered in collar leather for enlisted and pigskin for officers, and was manufactured at the Rock Island Arsenal. There are three lengths to accommodate the blade lengths. Nickel-plated steel scabbards have also been noted. They are rare and assumed to have been produced at the Springfield Armory.

L'Armurier or The Arm's Maker by Henryk Kossowski Jr. is a beautiful French bronze sculpture depicting a swordsmith inspecting his work and wondering about its quality. The statue is beautifully cast and detailed as were many of the works done at the Siot-Decauville and sculpted by Henryk Kossowski Jr. who was active during the years of 1880-1915. This swordsmith sculpture is featured in the book “Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, Vol. II“ on page 379, where it is identified as “L'Armurier“ or “The Arm's Maker“. It is bronze with golden gild and shown with the edge of his work bench and clamp beside his leg. The sword itself is in tact, which in many cases is either broken or missing. The sculpture is signed by the artist in the base "H. Kossowski" and marked by the Siot-Decauville foundry "II 251". Austrian Marine Naval Cutlass Sword Model 1858 used mainly for marine naval warfare while boarding enemy ships. The cutlass is easy and smooth to wield with a very good balance, suited for fighting in close quarters. In Austria this cutlass sword was called “Entersabel” or “Bordsabel”. Up until 1858 the Austrian Navy used French captured cutlasses and in 1858 ordered its original design which remained in service till 1904. On ships it was used mostly as a working tool for general use thus the scabbards are missing on most pieces and are extremely rare. The sword has a thick and forward heavy pipeback blade, a basket guard as for this kind of weapon. Produced by FS Jung with a mark of a cross surrounded by four smaller crosses. Dated 1858. No scabbard. Grips have damage but blade and the rest of the sword are in very good condition. Measurements 76 cm / 30 inches

US Civil War Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber By Ames

This model 1840 light artillery sabre was manufactured by US contract by Ames Manufacturing Co. of Chicopee, Massachusetts and in 1863 5,300 of these sabers were manufactured. This sword is marked "A.D.K. on ricasso, which are the initials of the inspector A.D. King. The grip is covered with leather and wound with brass wire. The scabbard is metal and since identified as the type 2 it has a ring around the mouth of the scabbard, the type 1 doesn't. Unlike the Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber the this artillery model 1840 has no basket guard. The American model 1840 light artillery sabre was designed after the French model 1829 mounted artillery sabre.

Original WWII USMC Bolo Knife

World War Two USMC Medical Corpsman machete Bolo knife with USMC marked on the blade and scabbard marked: "USMC / BOYT / 44". The blade is in good condition with some staining and other blemishes due to its age. The Boyt scabbard is in very good condition with some slight normal aging. The machete like bolo knife was used by the Medical Corpsman Marines in the South Pacific as a simple and tough knife for clearing brush and cutting branches to ease the movement of stretchers to and from the battlefields. The simple made design with wood grips riveted to the tang of the wide blade that is formed proved to be a good hand-to-hand combat knife fighting the Japanese soldiers in the thick jungles of the area. American War Of 1812 Eagle Head Five-Ball Sword

This is an early American sword known as the War of 1812 Eagle Head Five-Ball sword or spadroon. A spadroon is defined as a light sword with a straight-edged blade, enabling both cut and thrust attacks. A spadroon sword is in between a small sword (which thrusts only), and the heavier-bladed broadsword and they may have single or double edged blade. This American 1812 spadroon has the characteristic eagle head on the pommel and the distinctive five ball cast into the D-shaped guard. The handle is most likely made of animal bone and it is a bit cracked on one side. While the five-ball pattern hilt faded from fashion in England and France in the 1790's, it remained popular in the United States and several patterns of this sword were made for the various American military branches. The major differences were in the shape of the eagle head as some had its beak turned down, open, open with tongue, or closed pointing upward. The blade is stained but the beautifully designed etchings can still be seen. Don't forget that this sword is over 200 years old! Length: 94 cm (37 inches)

The Japanese Model 1889 Type 32 cavalry sabre has a machined blade with katana-like tip and was manufactured at the Kokura Arsenal according to the marks on the guard. The sword was in service during the Russo-Japanese War, World War One and World War Two. Two patterns of the Type 32 were produced, the earlier one known as ‘Ko,’ was issued to cavalry NCOs. The second pattern known as ‘Otsu,’ was issued to army transport NCOs and soldiers and was shorter. This sword for sale is an early ‘Ko’ pattern Type 32 cavalry sabre produced with the distinctive leather finger loop, checkered grips and with a slightly different opening to the scabbard. The sword is complete with its steel scabbard with a single hanger-ring, a working locking-catch, and a clearly marked serial number on the ricasso of the blade "73475".
