British War Savings Campaign Plaque Set

A set of two British War Savings Campaign plaques of the larger size of 57x33cm, one of Salute The Soldier Week 1944 and Wings For Victory Week 1943.  These are very rarely sold together as a set, in this size and this condition.  The plaques were made by De La Rue Plastics of molded Urea Formaldehyde / White Bakelite.  De Le Rue plastics company of Walthamstow London made the War Savings Campaign plaques for the War Office, and were presented to organizations and various other groups in recognition of efforts made to War Savings once attained certain savings targets. They were not awarded to individuals, so could often be seen displayed in village halls / offices, and community buildings.  The aim was to sponsor military equipment by the homefront civilian community.  Each county was set a target of money to raise and local civic leaders were presented with plaques as a reward for the fund raising efforts. The first plaque is the For Freedom - Salute The Soldier Week of 1944 featuring a British infantry soldier holding his Lee Enfield rifle with mounted bayonet showing explosions and aircraft in the background going to battle.  These were presented by the War Office. The second plaque is the Per Ardua Ad Astra - Wings For Victory Week of 1943 presented by the Air Ministry.  Per Ardua Ad Astra is a Latin phrase meaning "through adversity to the stars" which is the moto of the Royal Air Force.  This plaque features a winged warrior fighting a three-headed monster representing the enemy Axis Powers of Germany, Italy and Japan.  Below that the letter V (for Victory) is shown 5 times in Morse code. Both plaques are in excellent condition!

A wood framed three pieced plaque depicting three major periods of the history of Portugal. The three Portuguese history eras depicted are from left to right: Portuguese interregnum crisis of 1383–1385 (Crise De 1383-1385) was a civil war in Portuguese history during which no crowned king of Portugal reigned. The interregnum (a period of discontinuity or "gap" in rule of the land or country) began when King Ferdinand I died without a male heir and ended when King John I was crowned in 1385 after his victory during the Battle of Aljubarrota. Portuguese Restoration War 1640–1668 - was the war between Portugal and Spain that began with the Portuguese revolution of 1640 and ended with the Treaty of Lisbon in 1668, bringing a formal end to the Iberian Union.  The Iberian Union was the dynastic union of the Kingdoms of Castile and Aragon of Spain and the Kingdom of Portugal under the Castilian Crown that existed between 1580 and 1640. Reconquista Crista 711-1492 - the reconstruction period in Iberian history in which the Christian kingdoms of Spain and Portugal fought the invading Muslim Umayyad empire of Arab-Berber forces.  After the surrender of Granada in January 1492, the entire Iberian peninsula was controlled by Christian rulers. Or best offer Saint Barbara was an early Christian martyr worshiped by mainly Catholics who face danger of sudden and violent death at work.  She is the patron saint of artillery and explosives professions, armorers and gunsmiths, military engineers, miners and tunnelers.  This statue of Saint Barbara features the main items associated with her story: the three windowed tower, a cannon and a branch. This statue of Saint Barbara is one of two known to be made as a special commissioned work for the Czech Skoda company.  Skoda started in 1859 as an arms manufacturing company, later a producer of bicycles, motorcycles, cars and trucks.  During World War 2 and Nazi Germany's occupation of Czechoslovakia, the Skoda factory was under control of Reichswerke Hermann Göring and served as producers of artillery parts, aircraft, firearms and ammunition components.  This statue is thought to be presented to the Nazi officers who controlled the company in 1942.  The statue is said to be made of artillery grade metal. The small plaque at the base reads: Skodawerke Pilsen, Kreigsjahr 1942. It is in excellent condition. French World War One Commemorative Plaque

A rare and unique piece of history featuring a commemorative plaque presented to Marshall Ferdinand Foch, the Supreme Allied Commander during the First World War, and Georges Clemenceau, Prime Minister and Minister of War during the war.  The plaque shows all of the characteristics of World War One such as the trench warfare, airplanes and zeppelins first used in battle, firearms, helmets and digging tools.  In the center is a French soldier holding a flag that is being kissed by a woman, maybe representing the gratefulness of the French nation to its brave fighters. The plaque was presented as part of the Law of November 17th 1918, that was established to pay national tribute to the armies and their leaders who participated in World War One, the war to end all wars. Ottoman Artillery Cannon Brass Coat of Arms

An Ottoman artillery cannon brass coat of arms with the Turkish tughra of either Sultan Mehmed V (reign: 1909-1918) or Sultan Mehmed VI, the last Sultan of the Ottoman empire, ruling from 1918 t0 1922 when the Ottoman empire was dissolved and the Republic of Turkey was established. The tughra is a calligraphic monogram, seal or signature of a sultan that was affixed to all official documents and items such as coinage.  Each Sultan had his own tughra which was designed during the beginning of his reign by his court calligrapher. This brass coat of arms or crest was affixed to an artillery canon and is now secured to a wooden base with eight brass pins.  The crest is intricately made featuring flags, spears, swords, revolvers, books, flowers and a shield in the center. Battle of Mulhouse & Alsace Liberation WW1 Plaques

A beautiful set of two bronze plaques commemorating the battle of Mulhouse also called the Battle of Alsace, which began on 7 August 1914 and was the opening attack of the First World War by the French Army against Germany.  The Germans counter attacked days later making the French leave the city on the 11th of August.  The plaques feature A French officer kissing an Alsatian young woman in traditional dress who throws herself in his arms.   In the background the French infantry are charging and on the right a fallen panel inscribed with DEUTSCHES REICH.  The plaques are signed on the left: Joe Descomps SCR, A Chambin Editeur, and on the right Georges Scott, 8 Aout (August) 1914. One of the plaques is on a large wooden frame and the other plaque is on a wooden desk stationary pad with 1914-1918 shown on the bottom. Israeli Air Force Mirage jet commemorative model display in art deco style made of die cast aluminum and a wooden base with the Israel Air Force insignia on it.  The Mirage is distinct with it triangular wings, single engine and pointed front.  This display of the IAF Mirage jet was usually given as a gift to retired Air Force personnel and foreign dignitaries.  It is in very good condition with normal blemishes due to its age.  Dated under the base 14th of November 1972. L’Armurier or The Arm’s Maker by Henryk Kossowski Jr.

L'Armurier or The Arm's Maker by Henryk Kossowski Jr. is a beautiful French bronze sculpture depicting a swordsmith inspecting his work and wondering about its quality.  The statue is beautifully cast and detailed as were many of the works done at the Siot-Decauville and sculpted by Henryk Kossowski Jr. who was active during the years of 1880-1915.  This swordsmith sculpture is featured in the book “Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, Vol. II“ on page 379, where it is identified as “L'Armurier“ or “The Arm's Maker“. It is bronze with golden gild and shown with the edge of his work bench and clamp beside his leg.  The sword itself is in tact, which in many cases is either broken or missing. The sculpture is signed by the artist in the base "H. Kossowski" and marked by the Siot-Decauville foundry "II 251". A German brass plaque featuring a crew of three soldiers operating the Schwarzlose or Maschinengewehr 08/MG 08 Machine Gun. The plaque in German: Erinnerung a.d. Dienstzeit translating to "In memory of the years in service" and dated 1935. The Schwarzlose M. 7 was designed by the Prussian firearms designer Andreas Wilhelm Schwarzlose in 1904, and used in service between 1908 to a bit after 1945.  The a Schwarzlose is a belt-fed machine gun, usually mounted on a tripod, and used by the Austro-Hungarian empire and later Germany, Italy, Greece, Netherlands, Sweden, Russia and in some colonial conflicts.
